Contemporary theories of motivation, such as Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Cognitive Evaluation Theory (CET), provide insights into advanced psychological processes by emphasizing the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in human behavior. These theories propose that psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are fundamental to fostering intrinsic motivation, which can enhance learning, performance, and well-being.

For example, SDT suggests that when individuals engage in activities that satisfy these psychological needs, they are more likely to be intrinsically motivated, leading to higher persistence and engagement. In contrast, external rewards or pressures may undermine intrinsic motivation, a phenomenon explained by CET.

Additionally, the concept of flow, a state of deep absorption in an activity, aligns with these theories by showing how the alignment of skills and challenges can lead to optimal experiences.
