I'm exporting a 4K video from Premiere Pro and the file size is too large for sharing online. What are the best ways to reduce it without sacrificing too much quality?

I'm working on a documentary project and need to upload the video to a platform with file size limits. The current export is over 10GB using H.264 codec. I've tried lowering the bitrate in Premiere Pro's export settings, but it either remains large or the quality drops noticeably. Are there specific codec recommendations or compression techniques I should use?

To reduce 4K video file sizes effectively while maintaining quality, start by switching to the H.265 (HEVC) codec in Premiere Pro, as it offers better compression than H.264. Go to Export Settings > Format and select H.265. Adjust the bitrate: for 4K, aim for a target bitrate of 30-50 Mbps using VBR 2-pass encoding for optimal results. Additionally, consider using external tools like HandBrake for post-export compression; set the constant quality (CRF) to around 18-22. Ensure your sequence settings match the export resolution to avoid unnecessary processing. For online sharing, you can also downscale to 1080p if acceptable, which significantly reduces file size.

Great question! Have you considered using proxies during editing to speed up the process before export?

HandBrake is a lifesaver for compression. I recommend the Fast 1080p30 preset for quick results.
