Height of instrument is equal to reduced level + back sight reading because back sight reading is taken opposite to direction of survey so it's value is positive. And intermediate sight and fore sight are taken in direction of survey so there value is negative. Another formula is
Height of instrument = reduced level - fore sight distance
0
