Each intercostal nerve travels in a neurovascular bundle with an intercostal artery and vein with the nerve running inferior to both blood vessels.
The neurovascular bundle is located in the costal groove in the under surface of each rib, between the internal intercostal muscle and the innermost intercostal muscle.
The intercostal nerve supplies much of the innervation of the thoracic wall (including the anterior body wall). The neurovascular bundle is arranged as vein, artery and nerve (mnemonics; V.A.N). This makes the intercostal nerve lies inferior to the intercostal artery.
